Indonesia’s appetite for foreign currency transactions is growing fast, and understanding foreign exchange transaction fees is becoming just as important as tracking the rate itself. As more Indonesians travel abroad, study overseas, send remittances, run cross-border businesses, or shop on global platforms, forex is no longer a niche financial tool. It has become part of everyday life.
Forex Is No Longer Just for the Few
Steven Dhalimarta, Liabilities Banking Services Head at PT Bank Danamon Indonesia Tbk, shared this shift during the Danamon Journalist Class 2026 event in Jakarta on July 8, 2026. He noted that forex used to be seen as an expensive tool reserved for select groups. Today, it has become a daily necessity for global transactions.
The numbers back this up. Foreign currency third-party funds at banks grew 18.1% year-to-date and 18.7% year-on-year as of May 2026. Foreign currency savings accounts grew even faster, up 29.9% year-on-year in the same period. Debit card usage for overseas transactions also jumped 37% year-on-year as of March 2026.
What’s Driving the Growth?
Several factors are fueling this trend:
- Increased international mobility — more Indonesians are traveling for tourism, religious pilgrimage, and business
- Overseas education funding — families are setting aside forex for their children’s international schooling
- Migrant worker remittances — cross-border money transfers continue to rise
- SME cross-border trade — small and medium businesses are exporting and importing through e-commerce
- Global digital spending — subscriptions and purchases on platforms like Agoda, Amazon, and Netflix are becoming routine
Why Foreign Exchange Transaction Fees Matter More Than the Rate
Many people assume the lowest sell rate automatically means the best deal. That assumption can be costly. A rate that looks cheap on the surface may not actually save money once you factor in foreign exchange transaction fees.
How Spread Adds to Your Foreign Exchange Transaction Fees
The spread — the gap between the buy rate and the sell rate — plays a bigger role than most people realize. A wider spread means higher potential costs when buying and later reselling currency. A bank might advertise a lower sell rate, but if its spread is wide, the total cost of a full transaction cycle can still end up higher.
Other Hidden Charges to Watch For
Beyond the spread, several other costs can quietly add up:
- Account administration fees — some foreign currency accounts carry monthly charges that accumulate over time
- Account closing fees — costs that shutting down a forex account can trigger
- Overseas ATM withdrawal fees — often, both the local ATM-owning bank and the card-issuing bank in Indonesia charge a fee for the same withdrawal
- Physical banknote withdrawal fees — additional charges for cash-out transactions
According to Steven, overseas ATM fees are the most commonly overlooked cost. When you combine both charges, the total can add up to a significant amount relative to what you actually withdraw.
Beware of Double Conversion Costs
Another pitfall is double conversion, which can happen when you use a regular debit card linked to a rupiah account abroad. The card network may first convert the transaction from the local currency to US dollars, then the issuing bank converts it again from US dollars to rupiah. Each conversion step adds cost, making the final transaction more expensive than expected.
Cash vs. Digital: Which Cuts Down on Fees?
Physical cash still has its place for certain situations, but it comes with risks: you can lose it, damage it, wear it out, or lose value when you exchange it back. Digital forex transactions, on the other hand, let customers track balances and rates through mobile banking, all under regulatory oversight and standard banking security protocols.
Money changers remain a practical option for small, quick cash exchange needs. For larger or more complex transactions, banks offer more integrated services, including accounts, debit cards, and international transfers.
Managing Foreign Exchange Transaction Fees Wisely
As cross-border activity keeps expanding alongside digital economic growth, understanding the full cost structure behind every transaction is more important than ever. The real measure of a good forex product isn’t the exchange rate alone. The total transaction cost, including spread, fees, and conversion charges, determines true value.
